Historically, he who ruled from Delhi was best able to control the sub continent. Strategic routes from Central Asia and the high valleys of Afghanistan are accessible from here.

Mughal control of Delhi began in the early 16th century with Emperor BABAR, a former overload of Samarkand and a descendant of both Tamarlane and Genghis khan. Following Babar’s death in 1530, his son Humayun ascended the throne. His great grandson was SHAH JAHAN, the emperor behind the Taj Mahal.

The city originated, when the fort at AGRA faced agonizing heat, coupled with insufficient accommodation and space for Shahjahan’s lavish lifestyle and his great ceremonial processions. The city of SHAHJAHANABAD (THE ABODE OF SHAHJAHAN), bears a woman’s stamp. It was Jahan Ara, the favorite daughter of Shahjahan, who laid the foundation of the city around 1639. This is known as Old Delhi today and the heart of Delhi can be found here, three hundred and fifty years old, yet strong and beating.
